Class of 2020 Information
In the most recent school communication sent on May 13, we provided updates regarding Baccalaureate Mass; Senior Yearbook, Award, and Diploma Box Pick-Up; and Graduation (both virtual and a future on-campus celebration). This information is reflected in the May event listings below.
We have been actively engaged in planning for the celebration and recognition of the OLP Class of 2020 this May. We recognize that this is an extremely difficult time. However, within the set limitations of these times, we remain committed to creatively celebrating the OLP Class of 2020.
On Monday, April 6 we hosted a senior meeting to update them on the current situation for events. At this meeting we listened to the needs of our students and have since then we have been actively planning for these events. The updates from this meeting were communicated to our Class of 2020 parents in this school communication sent prior to our Easter Break. As the health crisis continues to be prolonged, we want to provide you with updated details on our end of the year events.
While these are far from traditional times, our goal is to reimagine these events as meaningfully as possible within the real-time parameters afforded to us. Unfortunately, we are faced with several events that are no longer able to continue due to COVID-19 and Executive Orders. We will be sending the virtual meeting links for specific events as the event date approaches.
Class of 2020 May Events
Senior Chalk Project & Naviance College Survey- Ongoing
With your help, Senior Chalk Day has been reimagined. As students commit to attending various universities, we are asking students to decorate a window, front door or Google slide to celebrate their accomplishments and that they are part of the Class of 2020. Students with access to chalk are also encouraged to decorate a driveway or sidewalk near, or in front of their home. They should then take a picture and submit that photo to their Counselor. We also encourage them to share via Instagram and tag @academyofourladyofpeace! Counselors are currently preparing an online slide deck to share during morning announcements and at the Senior Farewell Assembly on May 18, 2020.
Many colleges and universities have extended their registration deadlines (be sure to check with your prospective school directly). For this reason, we plan to celebrate college commitments throughout the entire month of May. An email with directions has been sent to the Class of 2020. Please encourage your daughter to complete her college acceptance survey via Naviance. We use the data from this survey to publish your daughter's college admissions in the graduation program (which will be printed for our virtual graduation ceremony). This is also the mechanism to request where a student’s final transcript should be sent.
Senior Spotlights - Ongoing
Follow OLP social media channels to see various Senior Spotlights from members of the Class of 2020! Interested in being featured? Contact Becca Fink at [email protected].
Class of 2020 House Party - Saturday, May 9, 2020 - 6:30 - 7:30 pm
Given the current orders from Public Health officials, we are no longer able to offer a traditional prom experience. It has been conveyed to us that large group events are likely to be limited by Public Health orders through the end of this summer and possibly beyond. Despite not being able to have a prom experience, we are inviting the Class of 2020 to gather for a virtual OLP House Party on Saturday, May 9, 2020, from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. We currently have a student committee meeting to plan this event. Stay tuned for more details. We also look forward to supporting a future class social celebration when allowed, perhaps around the time of the in-person graduation ceremony. We look forward to continuing to engaging the class in dialogue about what this event will entail.
Evening of Excellence & Academic Awards - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - 5:00 - 6:00 pm
OLP’s annual celebration for academic awards will take place virtually this year. All are welcome to participate, however, the parents of students who are receiving an award will receive an emailed invitation the week of May 4, 2020.
Spring Sports Senior Recognition Night - Thursday, May 14, 2020 - 5:00 - 6:00 pm
Seniors who participated in the spring sports season are invited alongside their teammates to be recognized for their contributions to the team and sport. All spring sports will hold their team’s “Senior Night” virtually within this event.
Le Prochain Event: Alumnae Induction Ceremony - Friday, May 15, 2020, 8:00 -9:00 pm
The Class of 2020 will participate in the first-ever alumnae induction ceremony. Students will be invited to join OLP faculty, staff and the large network of alumnae from all over the world to be inducted into the OLP alumnae community. We are keeping elements of this ceremony a surprise!
Senior Farewell Assembly - May 18 , 2020 3:00 - 4:00 pm
One of the most treasured OLP traditions, we look forward to celebrating seniors at the Senior Farewell Assembly virtually on May 18 at 3:00 pm. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in this annual OLP tradition. We are working hard as a team to truly make this a memorable and special celebration of the Class of 2020. A recording will also be shared after the event to pass along to extended family members or those not able to watch live.
Class of 2020 Grad Night
Given the indefinite extension of the social distancing regulations and the closure of Disneyland, grad night and prom have been canceled. We are grateful that Disneyland and the transportation company, “Sun Diego” have agreed to provide full refunds. Since many companies are working remotely, their goal is to provide us these refunds as soon as possible. We will keep you updated on an expected date to receive the refunds as we learn more.
Senior Yearbook, Award, and Diploma Box Pick-Up - Friday, May 22, 2020:
Times will be Assigned
Seniors will sign up for a timeslot to pick up a box of special senior items on the morning of May 22, 2020. This will not be a social gathering. Seniors must stay in their cars and drive through Circle Drive to pick up a box that will contain their yearbook, OLP diploma, senior mug, St. Joseph Medal, honor cords, and more. Please consider this pick up required as elements provided will be needed for the virtual graduation celebration that same afternoon. Students should include a sign on the dashboard of their car with their last name. Please be sure that you have cleared all fees with the Business Office in advance. If you are delinquent in your tuition or fees, you will be unable to pick-up your Senior Box.
Baccalaureate Mass - Thursday, May 21, 2020 - 6:00 - 7:00 pm
We will hold a virtual celebration of Baccalaureate Mass in the OLP Chapel with Father John Amsberry, Dr. Lek, and Mrs. Hooper on Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 6:00 pm. All faculty and staff will also participate virtually. Parents and family members are encouraged to join virtually. An email invitation with a link is forthcoming.
Graduation - Virtual Celebration Friday, May 22, 2020 - 4:30 - 5:30 pm
We are planning two graduation ceremonies. The first graduation ceremony will be a virtual celebration on Friday, May 22, 2020, at 4:30 pm. This virtual event is meant to mark the achievement of OLP graduates and their completion of the Academy’s academic program. It does not replace the milestone of their actual graduation ceremony which will take place in the future on the OLP campus. All students are expected to participate in the virtual ceremony on Friday, May 22, 2020, at 4:30 pm.
While there will be some similarities to a traditional OLP graduation ceremony, the intention of this virtual event is to celebrate the accomplishments of the OLP Class of 2020 during this moment in history. This will include the following:
- Graduates should wear their OLP cap and gown.
- The ceremony will include special remarks from Dr. Lek; Mrs. Hooper; Mr. John Galvan, Director of Schools; a representative from the OLP class of 1970; and the OLP Class of 2020 Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
- At the virtual ceremony, we will read each student’s name and use Zoom technology to "spotlight" each graduate in her home. When the student’s name is called and spotlighted, we invite the parents of our graduates to hand their daughter their OLP diploma. This diploma is significant as it reflects the completion of the OLP program of study as of Friday, May 22, 2020. We will hold onto the OLP diploma cover and present it to graduates at the on-campus graduation for the Class of 2020.
This will require us to gather virtually to practice. Students have been asked to save the following dates and times for two virtual Class of 2020 commencement practices (attendance is considered mandatory):
Tuesday, May 19, 2020, at 2:00 pm
Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at 2:00 pm
We will review the program in its entirety at our practices next week. Students received their OLP caps and gowns today (we hope that you enjoyed today’s surprise)! For the first time in OLP history, graduates are invited to decorate their caps for their graduation celebration! Students may choose to decorate their cap with their favorite OLP memory or their future college plans. As part of the virtual graduation, students will be invited to share their cap designs with the audience. Please make sure to save your cap and gown for the on-campus celebration.
OLP students and their families will be sent a Zoom link next week to access the Class of 2020 virtual graduation. Due to capacity limitations on Zoom, we are asking that friends and family who want to view the graduation do so through an external service, likely Livestream.com (this will also be sent to families next week).
Graduation On-Campus at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, Date TBD
Update as of Tuesday, June 16, 2020
As we approach the planning of the on-campus graduation, we do not want to forgo the opportunity for each graduate to have their friends and family in attendance, just as the OLP classes before 2020 have had. For the ceremony, each graduate is allotted 10 tickets, which when combined with the OLP faculty and staff and the reunion class, makes this annual celebration a 2,000 person event.
Recently, the Diocese of San Diego sent us a notification that per San Diego’s County Health & Human Services Agency, in-person graduations are currently not permitted (in their place they have allowed for strict protocols that support drive-thru/drive-in commencement ceremonies). We have also been advised that it is not probable that large events will be allowed to occur in San Diego County prior to August 2020. Just last week, a local high school planned an in-person graduation ceremony that was halted by San Diego County for being in violation of the public health order. Your safety is our priority and we continue to abide by all requirements of the San Diego County Health offices. With all of this in mind, we are sorry to report that we are not able to gather this summer to celebrate the in-person graduation of the Class of 2020.
We will continue to hold onto hope that we will be able to gather on North Terrace for this celebration in December 2020. It remains our goal to identify a date where the majority of the class will be able to attend. More details will follow in the coming months.
We empathize that these events are not what you envisioned for your daughter, but the circumstances of our world are challenging us to reimagine these traditions. We remain committed to celebrating the Class of 2020 both individually and as a whole and look forward to recognizing their achievements throughout these celebrations!
The California Scholarship Federation is now accepting applications with 3rd quarter grades from all current Seniors. Due to our circumstances with remote learning, we have adapted our application to support student submissions in compliance with CSF expectations.
Applications must be submitted NO LATER THAN Tuesday, May 5th at 5:00 p.m. Important change: Seniors will not submit a 3rd quarter grade report. The application is only a Google form. Students should still select no more than 5 classes and provide an accurate letter grade for each. No late applications will be accepted.
Students are responsible for ensuring that your application is received by the deadline. Please email Ms. Cunningham ( [email protected] ) for any questions regarding eligibility, number of active semesters, or the application process.
