DEPARTMENT PRICIPLES AND PHILOSOPHY

The Religion Department strives to present the message of Jesus as the basis for a mature Christian way of life through a catechesis which gives clarity and vigor to faith, fosters living in the Spirit of Christ and encourages participation in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church.

Since community is at the heart of a mature Christian life, the Religious Studies Department strives also to teach students the meaning of community. Maturing through experiences of community within the school, the students are better able to give apostolic service in their families, parishes, neighborhood, nation, and world.

The Department of Religious Studies objectives and aims are as follows:

  • To create an environment which facilitates growth/development of a Christian person;
  • To demonstrate that the Church exists in order to serve the world of which it must be a vitalizing part;
  • To help students become aware that self-fulfillment and world-development are primary concerns of Christianity;
  • To assist the student to develop an understanding of the major religious tenets of the Catholic faith through Scripture, literature, symbol and Tradition;
  • To inspire the individual to continue and further develop her appreciation of the faith through continued education and reading;
  • To promote the growth of personal spirituality in each student by means of:
    1. exposure to modern Christian witness.
    2. opportunities to express each student’s belief through community celebration and involvement in community services.
  • To assist the student to develop an awareness of contemporary social problems and the Christians responsibilities towards them;
  • To create an atmosphere for questioning, deepening, and intensifying religious experiences;
  • To provide a foundation for ethics and Christian decision-making in future life situations as a woman leader, with leadership training and skills;
  • To remain available as a departmental resource to the school's Christian foundation and to the religious activities of the school at large.
