DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY

The Physical Education Department at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace is designed to make a contribution to all phases of individual development. Our goals reflect the philosophy of the school as the department strives to develop the concept of wellness. We emphasize a knowledge of motor skills and of basic health in order to promote a higher level of physical fitness. Along with the physical aspect of the program, the department also feels the necessity of imparting certain social objectives, such as: team work, leadership and courtesy; which will help prepare the student for her role as both follower and leader. Another of the primary aims of the department is to provide the students with a constructive way of occupying leisure time, particularly through individualized activities and team sports. Aesthetic appreciation is another valuable goal of the department. Dance, choreography, rhythm and movements allow students to express their artistic self. In keeping with the Catholic identity of the school, the overall global philosophy of the department is wellness education as it related to the integration of the whole person: body, mind and spirit.
