REGISTRATION PROCESS

In order for the Academy to prepare the schedule of classes it will offer for the next school year, it is necessary early in the spring for all students to select courses they intend to pursue during the coming year.

It is important that students enroll in courses most appropriate to their goals, needs, abilities, and interests. Students are, therefore, advised to consult their parents, subject teachers, the Dean of Studies, and their advisers for assistance in planning their high school program. The faculty is vitally concerned with the educational progress and vocational interests of the students and are anxious to help in any way possible.

In scheduling classes for the current year, the school will look at the number of students selecting each course and at the particular combination of classes each student requests. The Master Schedule is arranged in direct accordance with these figures. It is necessary, therefore, that all course selections are made carefully and intentionally. Change requests are generally made only in response to summer courses attended or failing grades earned in pre-requisite classes taken in previous semesters. Students who decide later in the year or during the first semester of next year to change a class frequently find that few, if any, alternative classes are available.

A three-part registration process is provided to assist in the accuracy of this selection:

First , a series of student-parent advisement meetings is scheduled for late January through early February. These meetings will address specific grade level offerings, graduation requirements, and college admissions expectations. Every student and at least one parent representative are required to attend this meeting.

Second , all students are required to list alternative choices for each class selected. This helps the school schedule those specific courses in which the students indicate an expressed interest. Students will be scheduled into alternative courses only if first choice options are not available.

Third , each student must hand in her completed Course Selection Sheet on the designated day.

Finally, scheduling changes and conflicts do at times occur. When insufficient numbers of students request classes, these classes will be dropped and the students' alternative choices will be substituted. Similarly, should a conflict occur between a required and an elective course selection, the school will automatically change the student's elective to her alternate choice. All such changes will be announced after the initial registrations are fully processed.

Parents seeking advisement assistance may call the school during class hours. Members of the Guidance and Counseling Department will be available by appointment. Department Chairpersons can be reached via voice mail.
